Car Seat Safety and Regulations

The American Academy of Pediatrics provides recommendations regarding child safety seats that are enforced by law in the State of Louisiana. Below is a table summarizing the seat requirements appropriate for your child according to their age and size.

Newborn to 2 years old
All infants and toddlers should ride in a rear-facing car seat until they are at least 2 years old OR reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car seat manufacturer.
Toddlers and Preschoolers
When they have outgrown the rear-facing weight or height limit on their convertible seat, children should use a forward-facing seat with a 5 point harness seat belt for as long as possible.
School-aged children
When children have outgrown the forward-facing car seat, they should use a belt-positioning booster seat until until they are 60 lbs and 4'9".
Older children
When children are old enough and large enough for the vehicle seat belt to fit them correctly, they should always use lap and shoulder belts. All children younger than 13 should ride in the back seat.
